Two years ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. That story has a happy ending, however, I wanted to make my remaining years have purpose even beyond friends and family. I didn’t have to look far for a cause…I chose the Cause of America with its multifaceted and tumultuous existence. The world is changing. The evolutionary path of society has been dictated by technology, growing population, and greed. We are embracing what expedites our movements and thoughts while shedding that which would make us stronger and wiser. The bigger the government gets, the deafer and more out of touch it becomes. Americans have become the slaves of a manipulated Constitution which serves us when it serves the government. Things are going to get worse in America before they get better. WE THE PEOPLE have the power to keep the government “Checks and Balances” process perpetually open…if we don’t choose the route of least resistance. Ghandi was successful because he used the New Testament teachings to appeal to the British conscience. When Gandhi and his followers marched with him to the sea in order to protest the salt tax, the British beat them down, but they continued to walk peacefully. This stung the British conscience and appealed to their Christian values. Through this the British realized their evils and the cruelty that lay in their oppression. Many of our government representatives don’t have a conscience! The others are either clueless, cowards, power gluttons, or a combination of all three. We can chuckle and nod approvingly at the last two sentences, but we are becoming just like them. Ghandi is still an inspiration for millions of people in the world, but his path was not one of peaceful protest “in the shadows”. Americans are not addressing their fears and concerns with the government because of fears and concerns with their lives and livelihood. We keep safely “below the radar” because our gut is telling us that Big Brother will monitor us, make our tax season “hell”, or question our patriotism. I remember the words of one radical. Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death! Patrick Henry - March 23, 1775 Ghandi’s protests were effective in a civilized world, where there existed a sense of honor; our techniques will have to veer. I know the population is demanding and that there are so many special interest groups that the government cannot keep up. WE THE PEOPLE are going to have to be reasonable, as well. We need to accept some inconveniences, but never…under any circumstances…should we feel like we are going to have to negotiate our personal freedoms! There are murmurings that our freedom of speech via talk radio, television, and the internet are being “looked into”. Will there come a time when a man cannot speak his mind when it is in opposition to the government? Will there come a time when a woman can bare her breasts, but not her moral views via the media? Only if we remain complacent! WE THE PEOPLE must read to be informed, write to our representatives (local to the White House), get visible, talk-the-talk, walk-the-walk, and remember…Freedom is not an American cause…it is an American right!
