Okay, maybe you squeaked by in U.S. History class, however, you must have at least heard of the Checks and Balances system in America. When the three branches of government were set in place, the purpose was to eliminate any of them from becoming too powerful. The EXECUTIVE BRANCH (Presidential) could veto a law passed by Congress. The LEGISLATIVE BRANCH (Congress) could, with a two-thirds vote from both houses (House of Representatives and the Senate) override the President's veto. The JUDICIAL BRANCH (Supreme Court) could "check" Congress by declaring a law unconstitutional. Since Congress has to approve the President's judicial appointees, to the Supreme Court, the power is balanced. WHEW! I PROMISE THERE WILL BE NO TEST. This "spot-on" quote was penned by John Emerich Edward Dalber Acton (moralist and historian) in a letter to Bishop Mandell Creighton in 1887. Baron Acton wrote: "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely..." We now have a Democrat in the White House and a Democratic majority in Congress. President-Elect Obama can appoint anyone he wishes to the Supreme Court. Is Congress going to check him? House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-California, has held off scheduling votes already until "it becomes clear" certain measures can pass the Senate, where it would need a vote of 60 Senators (a supermajority).
THE HUFFINGTON POST wrote: WASHINGTON — Democrats broadened their control of Congress, though in the Senate they fell short of the 60 votes needed for a filibuster-proof majority that would have given them almost unbridled power over legislation.
The Democrats still have hope. Currently, Minnesota is in the midst of a recount and Alaska just lost a Republican Senator unfortunately to corruption...neither party is immune. This is where Georgia Democrats can literally save America's backside. The State of Georgia will be having a run-off election, December 2nd. Okay, the Republicans got spanked this past election, however, if you seek total annihilation...you may snuff out America's last hope to maintain the equilibrium it so desperately requires. I am making a plea to Georgia Democrats to vote Republican just this once...and think through all that hangs in the "balance".
Note: One election should not mean victory for one party at the cost of lost freedoms for all Americans...but this one just could.
May God bless America...and may America deserve it!
